India Defeats Pakistan in the Asian Games Final
Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat first. India got off to a strong start and eventually posted 211/6 in 20 overs, putting Pakistan under significant pressure from the beginning.
Opener Abhishek Sharma played an aggressive innings and scored 61 runs, providing India with the early momentum needed in a high-scoring T20 final. Tilak Varma then added an important unbeaten half-century, while Shivam Dube contributed valuable runs during the closing stages of the innings.
Pakistan needed 212 runs to win the gold medal.
The Pakistani chase remained competitive for much of the innings, particularly because of a brilliant 96 from Hasan Nawaz. However, India kept taking wickets at crucial moments and eventually restricted Pakistan to 192/6 after 20 overs, securing a 19-run victory.
Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma Lead India’s Batting
India’s total of 211 was built around aggressive stroke play.
Abhishek Sharma provided the early acceleration, scoring 61 runs and setting up a strong platform. His attacking approach helped India maintain a high scoring rate during the opening overs.
Tilak Varma continued the momentum and finished with an unbeaten 51. Shivam Dube also played an important late cameo as India pushed beyond the 200-run mark.
The combination of fast starts and a strong finish gave India a total that ultimately proved difficult for Pakistan to chase.
Pakistan’s Fightback Falls Short
Pakistan did not surrender easily.
Hasan Nawaz produced one of the outstanding individual performances of the final, scoring 96 runs from 51 balls. His aggressive innings kept Pakistan in contention and created pressure on the Indian bowling attack.
However, India’s bowlers responded during the decisive stages of the chase. Jasprit Bumrah’s penultimate over was particularly important, restricting Pakistan’s scoring momentum and leaving the chasing side with an extremely difficult equation for the final over.
Pakistan eventually finished on 192/6, handing India another Asian Games cricket gold medal.
India Retains the Asian Games Cricket Title
The 2026 victory means India has successfully defended its men’s Asian Games cricket title. India also entered the 2026 competition as the defending men’s champions after winning gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
India’s success in 2026 has been particularly notable because the country’s women’s team also won gold earlier in the tournament.
The Indian women’s team defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the women’s final on September 22. Smriti Mandhana scored 79 from 45 balls, while India’s bowlers dismissed Sri Lanka for 69 to complete a dominant victory.
As a result, India completed a gold-medal sweep in both men’s and women’s cricket at the 2026 Asian Games.
